📜 Origin Story
The phrase originates from the Qing dynasty work 'Chushi Siguori Riji' (Diary of a Mission to Four Countries) by Xue Fucheng, dated the tenth day of the twelfth month in the sixteenth year of the Guangxu reign (1890). Xue Fucheng observed that in Western families, once a son married, he would establish a separate residence and manage his own finances, and in extreme cases family members would not even keep in touch with one another. He used this to contrast Western individualism with Chinese familial traditions.
