The phrase comes from Qing dynasty author Cao Xueqin's classic novel Dream of the Red Chamber, Chapter 5. In the scene, the fairy Disenchantment fears Baoyu is about to learn heavenly secrets, so she closes the register of destinies and laughingly tells him to follow her to enjoy the wondrous sights instead of pondering an unsolvable riddle there. A sealed gourd that cannot be opened or seen through became a metaphor for matters that leave people guessing. The expression later spread as a vivid image of being kept in the dark.
