📖 Meaning
A fine horse can only be distinguished on a long journey. By extension, a person's true character and ability only reveal themselves after prolonged experience, hardship, or training. It teaches that first impressions are unreliable and that time is the real test of worth.
📜 Origin Story
The phrase comes from Jiaozhi (《矫志》), a work by Cao Cao, the warlord and poet who founded the state of Wei during the Three Kingdoms period. The original line reads “道远知骥,世伪知贤” — “the road being long, one comes to know the good horse; the world being false, one comes to know the worthy.” Cao Cao wrote it to express his pragmatic belief that people should be judged through trials rather than reputation. The imagery rests on the ancient understanding that a horse's endurance and speed only become obvious over an extended journey.
💡 Example Usage
项目苦撑三年,道远知骥,团队里谁能扛事如今一目了然。
The project struggled on for three years; as the old saying goes, a long road reveals the good horse, and now it is perfectly clear who in the team can truly shoulder responsibility.
