This idiom originates from the Zizhi Tongjian, recording an event during the seventh year of Zhenguan under Emperor Taizong of Tang. The retired Emperor Gaozu hosted a banquet where he commanded the Göktürk Khagan Jieli to perform a dance and the southern tribal chieftain Feng Zhidai to recite poetry. Amused and moved by the sight of peoples from the far north and distant south assembled together in harmony, he remarked that such unity of Hu and Yue under one roof had never been seen since ancient times.
