📖 Meaning
A general term for the way to make money and prosper. It refers to strategies and principles for growing wealth and becoming rich. The phrase carries the sense of time-tested, sagely advice for accumulating fortune.
📜 Origin Story
Legend has it that during the Spring and Autumn period, King Goujian of Yue, besieged at Kuaiji, adopted Jiran's strategies, cultivated his state for ten years, and thereby made his country wealthy. After Fan Li had avenged the humiliation of Kuaiji, he applied Jiran's strategies to his own household and amassed a fortune of tens of millions. Jiran's strategies mainly refer to the agricultural cycle theory of six bumper years followed by six drought years, the grain price-stabilization policy benefiting both farmers and merchants, and the principle of accumulating wealth through observing prices and buying low while selling high.
