The relevant line reads: 'When a daughter is born, she is laid to sleep on the ground, wrapped in swaddling clothes, and given a clay whorl to play with' (乃生女子，载寝之地，载衣之裼，载弄之瓦). In ancient times, 瓦 referred to a clay spindle whorl used in spinning thread, and giving it to a baby girl expressed the wish that she would grow up to be diligent in weaving and other household crafts. Later writers turned this image into a set phrase for congratulating a family on the birth of a daughter, and it remains the female counterpart of 弄璋之喜, which celebrates the birth of a son.
