📜 Origin Story
谈过其实 is a variant of the well-known idiom 言过其实, which traces back to the Three Kingdoms period. According to Records of the Three Kingdoms (三国志), the Shu-Han strategist Zhuge Liang assessed his subordinate Ma Su, saying he 言过其实，不可大用 (his words exceeded his deeds and he could not be entrusted with great responsibility). Ma Su's later defeat at the Battle of Jieting confirmed this judgment, and the phrase entered the language as a warning against overstatement. 谈过其实 carries the same meaning, with 谈 substituting for 言.
