This idiom originates from the 'Biography of Qing Bu' in Sima Qian's 'Records of the Grand Historian' (《史记·黥布列传》), written during the Western Han dynasty. When the general Ying Bu (also known as Qing Bu) was summoned by the Han emperor, he reflected on the fates of Han Xin and Peng Yue — two other founding heroes of the Han dynasty who had recently been executed. Ying Bu remarked that the three of them were '同功一体之人' — men of equal merit and standing — and that, seeing his peers killed, he feared the same misfortune would befall him, which ultimately drove him to rebel.
