The phrase originates from a commentary by the Song dynasty Neo-Confucian scholar Cheng Yi, as quoted in Zhu Xi's collected annotations on the Analects (《论语·为政》). In the original passage, Confucius gives different answers to his disciples Zi You and Zi Xia when they each ask about filial piety (孝). Cheng Yi explained that Zi You was capable of providing for parents but sometimes lacked reverence, while Zi Xia was upright but lacked warmth, so Confucius corrected each according to his particular weakness—thus teaching them differently based on their individual qualities. This practice gave rise to the later idiom 因材施教.
