📜 Origin Story
The phrase is recorded in the "Luo River" (洛水) chapter of the Commentary on the Water Classic (水经注), written by Li Daoyuan in the Northern Wei dynasty (386–534 AD). In it, a ruler sighs in admiration: "卿庸中皦皦，铁中铮铮也" — "You are the outstanding one among the mediocre, the clanging one among iron." The wording echoes an earlier Eastern Han tradition: according to the Book of the Later Han (后汉书·刘盆子传), Emperor Guangwu once praised the surrendered Chimei chancellor Xu Xuan as "铁中铮铮，庸中佼佼" (the clanging among iron, the outstanding among the mediocre). Li Daoyuan rewrote 佼佼 with the variant character 皦, giving rise to the form 庸中皦皦.
