The idiom originates from the Song Dynasty scholar Su Xun, the father of the famed literary masters Su Shi and Su Zhe. In his preface to the family genealogy titled 《族谱引》, Su Xun reflected on the purpose of compiling a clan lineage record. He wrote that upon reading the family genealogy, feelings of filial piety and brotherly devotion would naturally and spontaneously arise in one's heart. The word 油然 originally evoked the image of oil flowing smoothly, metaphorically describing how emotions well up effortlessly. Over time, the expression broadened to describe any thought or feeling that arises naturally and unprompted.
