📖 Meaning
Literally "from Kuai on downwards." It describes things that fall below a certain point and are therefore not worth commenting on or criticizing. It is used to dismiss everything after a named person, work, or event as too mediocre to merit discussion.
📜 Origin Story
The idiom comes from Zuo Qiuming's "Zuo Zhuan" (Chronicle of Zuo), written in the pre-Qin period and recording the 29th year of Duke Xiang of Lu. When Ji Zha, a prince of the state of Wu, visited Lu, he was treated to a performance of Zhou dynasty music and dances from the various feudal states. He offered a critique of the music of each state in turn, but once the musicians performed the music of Kuai, he fell silent and passed no further judgment. The original line reads "From Kuai downwards there was nothing to criticize," and later generations shortened it to this idiom.
