This idiom originates from a letter written by Lu Xun to Zheng Zhenduo in the early 20th century. Lu Xun recounted a certain person at Xiamen University who shamelessly flattered and fawned over the principal to curry favor. After his rivals were driven out, however, the principal came to look down upon him as well, and he ultimately could no longer remain in his position — a situation Lu Xun found both ironic and laughable.
